The material from this piece was derived from a recording of the Zapotec poet, Esteban Ríos Cruz saying a phrase in Zapotec: Pa cadi ganda cuezanu, ne yénenu ni cazaaca, mba’binitinu guendaridunna (if we cannot stop and pay attention, we’ve lost all connection). I filtrated the recording and gathered its harmonic properties, thus arriving to the melodic material heard at the beginning. The composition then proceeds to do a certain zoom in into those notes, and culminates in “The Connection Game” -the players pass the notes around in some sort of ping pong game, thus generating polyrhythms and fun times.
